He is watching

I have decided to talk about Geroge Orwell's novel 1984 as the topic of this critical analysis post. This novel was written at the cusp of the end of the Modernism era. This novel was originally published in 1945 and some of the topics that are mentioned in the book are relevant to today's events. I had read this novel in my Sophomore year of high school and I remember some details of the novel and see how it relates to today. A very important line in the novel is "Big Brother is watching you", to those who have not read this novel, this line is an important message in the story as Big Brother is the one who sees everything the citizens of Oceania do. Everywhere you go there are surveillance cameras and you cannot escape from Big Brother. The government sees what you do and you cannot commit a crime without them knowing. The privacy of the citizens is nonexistent and it does remind me of how in today's society we also are constantly under surveillance.

Our privacy is limited in our world today. Everything that we search for is monitored and recorded. Everything that is connected to the internet is also getting our data and companies use it. We may not be under an extreme surveillance system like in the novel however the more technologically advanced we become, it will become inevitable. As a Computer Science major, I also understand that technology is dangerous when it comes to privacy. I do hope that even with so much technology, we don't completely lose our privacy.

  1. 1984 and the concept of Big Brother feels more real every year, doesn't it? This might be one of the most resonant books of the last century, unfortunately. I have always been deeply disturbed by this novel myself, but think that's the exact intended feeling! The style of writing and the way events unfold draws you in and sticks in your memory. This was a really good choice to connect here!

  2. Hey how's it going, I remember reading 1984 and you could honestly make a lot of connections from the book to today, it's actually pretty scary thinking about it. I heard recently PlayStation 4 started monitoring party chats and actively listening in to peoples conversations. That whole concept in and of itself is a parallel to big brother. People have been getting communication banned as well due to this change. If you know how to hack you could honestly invade anyone's privacy.

  3. Hi, I'm new to your blog, and I love the setup and vibe you have going on. I have not read this book, so I guess I am behind, but I was still able to follow your post. I liked that you chose a novel because I have yet to see a post that has been about literature. I think that the connections you made between the book and today are very relevant. What came to my mind from seeing the cover picture to your blog post was government spies, but then I started to think about technology and how it is thought that the government listens to our conversations. Not in the sense on FBI agents for every person, but that when your phone picks up key words adds for that will begin to pop up, or will become recommended for you on Amazon. Anyways, keep up the great work and have a good week.
