Another World

                                                          This I Believe

I believe that we immerse ourselves in worlds that give us pleasure. We find ways to distract ourselves from the obstacles that life presents. I believe that with every favorite song we have, we listen to the lyrics and find how to apply them to our lives. We may need a pick-me-up with a happy song or relatable lyrics when it comes to sad songs.

As an introvert, I have found a place in my heart for books. All my childhood revolved around me finding new books to read. I remember having my own library with over a hundred books. They ranged from informational children's books to novels which I read in my early teen years. I would get excited when I found a new book that matched my interests. I hated putting books down when it was time to go to bed or when I needed to do homework. Looking back on these memories make me see that I enjoyed reading so much because I liked the adventure each book led me through. I wanted to explore more and I see that is how I became so curious. To this day, I say that "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl is my all-time favorite book. It may be a children's book but it really does bring you into a different universe. The crazy and wacky inventions of Wonka and the shenanigans of the children.

I also have a place in my heart for music. Throughout the years my music tastes have changed. I first started to listen to music regularly when I was 10. Back then it was just Pop music that you heard on the radio. I liked it because it was catchy and I could sing along to the lyrics. My music taste now has branched out into a spectrum of emotions. The songs I listen to can range from sad songs when I'm feeling sad to songs that make me happy. I enjoy translating the lyrics if the song is in a different language. I wouldn't say I have a favorite song or artist that I could always listen to, my music tastes always change.

During Sophmore year in high school in my English class, we had been assigned to find a song that we heard regularly and analyze the lyrics and write an essay about our analysis. I chose the song Tomorrow by K-pop band BTS. When I first heard the song I liked it because it was a chill sounding song. It wasn't until a year later that I decided to search up the lyrics for it when I understood what they were singing. Fast forward to the assignment, I printed out the English translation of the song and annotated the majority of the lyrics. In my essay, I wrote about how the song was meant to be inspirational to those who felt like they failed. I had realized that there are songs out there that inspire people and lift them up.

Literature and music are only two mediums of art that are out there. There is so much art in this world and you cannot even name all of them with your two hands. I believe that art is meant to be enjoyed. There is no reason to disregard a medium that someone worked so hard to produce. I believe that art is meant to be looked through multiple perspectives. It gives a well-rounded analysis of an art form. Even if the creator meant no complex meaning, each person who stumbles upon that creation will see something different. Feel something different. The beauty of art is the difference in analyzing it.

  1. Hey Joseline, personally I 100% agree with you that art allows us to find new “worlds” to enjoy. As a person who is more introverted as well, I find a lot of enjoyment in video games and music. As for video games I have played a wide variety of different worlds, stories, and genres. All of them immersed me in some new way. Virtual reality games do a fantastic job with immersion. As a Star Wars fan playing the virtual reality game Vader Immortal it allowed you to feel like you were a jedi or sith. As for music I can pretty much listen to anything and still enjoy it. Whether it’s rock, pop, happy, or sad, I’ll probably enjoy it. Plus I think each song opens a “window” so to speak into someone else’s world or emotions.
